Celebrating 30 Years of Excellence: A Tribute to BARCA Agroforestal from the Brinkman Group

This year, BARCA Agroforestal celebrates 30 years of commitment to sustainable forestry and community collaboration in Central America. As part of the Brinkman Group family, BARCA has grown from its roots as a reforestation initiative in Parrita, Costa Rica, to an organization recognized for its responsible forestry practices and contributions to ecological resilience.

BARCA’s journey began in 1994 with the BIRD Eco plantations, a project aimed at revitalizing degraded lands with reforested teak and native hardwoods. Over the years, its work expanded to include innovative genetic improvement programs, biodiversity-focused forestry, and a strong commitment to the protection of natural forests. These milestones reflect BARCA’s dedication to balancing ecological care with economic viability.

Honouring BARCA’s Legacy and Team

At the heart of BARCA’s success are its people. BARCA is deeply rooted in the central West Coast communities of Costa Rica, with team members who have been with BARCA since the beginning. Betsy Barcus, Ricardo Luján, and José Corrales lead that team, whose decades of dedication have shaped BARCA’s evolution and represent the spirit of innovation and commitment that define the company. To mark this occasion, three key leaders shared their perspectives on BARCA’s evolution and vision for the future.

RicardoPost.jpg Ricardo Luján, Forestry Director, has been with BARCA since its early days in 1995 and reflects on the company's growth from a tropical reforestation project to a regional leader in sustainable forestry. He highlights milestones such as achieving Forest Stewardship Council® certification, becoming an FSC auditor and developing genetic programs that support both ecological restoration and economic sustainability.

BARCA’s work is a positive response to today’s climate challenges,” Ricardo observes. “We’ve balanced profitability with environmental stewardship, transforming rural areas into thriving ecosystems. It’s deeply fulfilling to see our projects foster biodiversity while supporting local livelihoods.”

With her background in HR, land management and organizational development, Betsy Barcus has been instrumental in guiding BARCA through times of change since 2002. Congratulations, to Betsy for her promotion to General Director for BARCA in 2024. She emphasizes the company’s dedication to environmental care and community collaboration.

BARCA is more than a forestry company—it’s a way of life,” Betsy shares. “Transforming cattle lands into vibrant ecosystems while fostering fair employment practices has been a defining aspect of our work. I’m proud of the resilience and adaptability that have brought us to where we are today.”

JosePost.jpg José Corrales joined BARCA in 1997, fresh out of Forestry school. Congratulations to Jose, for his promotion to Operations Director of BARCA in 2024. As a local forester who did his master's thesis on a BARCA project in 1996, he brings a wealth of operational expertise and an intimate understanding of the company’s work in the field. Jose highlights the importance of intimate community relations, data-driven forestry practices and the respect BARCA has for natural ecosystems.

Our commitment to protecting natural forests and ensuring minimal environmental impact is embedded in everything we do,” José explains. “The trust communities place in us and the positive changes we’ve fostered make this journey especially rewarding. It’s been an honour to help build a company known for integrity and impact

Looking Ahead

As BARCA looks to the next 30 years, the focus remains on intelligent land use, including expanding agroforestry, silvopastoral systems, and advancing genetic improvements in tree species to address climate resilience. This vision continues to emphasize the importance of collaboration with communities and fostering sustainable economic opportunities.
